NBC 6 South Florida was the first television station in Florida, and it was the 16th station to in the entire country. Since 1949, WTVJ has been the leading source of Miami news, weather, and traffic. Notable former staff includes Katie Couric and Larry King.

NBC South Florida is owned by NBCUniversal. It is an affiliate of the network NBC network. As an affiliate, NBC 6 tends to focus its original news coverage on local issues during the traditional morning, mid-day, evening and late-night news slots. The WTVJ news department currently produces 31 hours of station produced news broadcasts per week. Each weekday, there are five hours of newscasts, and an additional three hours for each day of the weekend. Since South Florida weather is so volatile, the WTVJ weather department is one of the few TV stations that uses two Doppler weather radar systems.
