KUSI News is one of the few local, but independent television channels in the country that receives decent viewing numbers. KUSI TV has been on the air since 1982, when began operations as a general entertainment station. It began offering San Diego local news broadcasts in 1990 with a simple 10:00 PM hourly newscast each night. Since then, the station has gradually added more news coverage, so that it has regularly scheduled broadcasts throughout the day. KUSI News developed a reputation for investigative and consumer watchdog segments led by Michael Turko, and The Turko Files. The station is perhaps best known for bringing on John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, as its Chief Meteorologist from 1994 until 2014.
